How to Make a Moscow Mule

How to Make a Moscow MuleTrying to figure out how to make a Moscow Mule? I mean, they’re everywhere these days but we’re always amazed when people don’t have the slightest clue what goes into them and what makes ’em so delicious. The keys to making a Moscow Mule are 1) use quality ingredients, 2) keep your recipe components icy cold, 3) master the basic recipe then 4) tap into your creative side and “get a little jiggy with it”.

Mules have a relatively complex flavor profile yet are one of the easiest drinks to spin up…ever. A true Moscow Mule is always served up in a copper mug and typically has a core of ginger beer, limes and ice. From there, you can go a lot of different ways…you can “go classic” and use vodka but rum, tequila and gin have also been used with great results. Additionally, muddling in fruits and/or herbs can take a Moscow Mule to the next level.

The recipes below will help you understand how to make a Moscow Mule like a pro and make the most of those copper mugs you just picked up. We lay down the classic Moscow Mule recipe plus another 8 tasty Moscow Mule twists that you can enjoy year round.

The Original Mule

Here it is: the classic Moscow Mule recipe, the one the copper mug was originally used for. Ensure your ginger beer and vodka icy cold before you whip up this one. 5 ingredients…deliciousness was never this easy.

How to Make a Moscow MuleIngredients:

  • Lime and mint (garnish)

Method:

  1. Fill copper mug with ice.
  2. Squeeze in the lime juice (do the full lime if you like your drink tangy).
  3. Pour in the ginger beer and vodka.
  4. Stir well then add lime and/or mint for garnish.
  5. Bottoms up!

Pro tip: many of the recipes call for adding in twists like fruit. When mixing a drink that calls for, say, blueberries, peaches or apples, use a stronger Ginger Beer (like Fever Tree or Q Ginger Beer) for a more pronounced ginger flavor and less fruitiness. However, add more fruit than the recipe calls for and a lighter Ginger Beer (from a brand like Cock & Bull or Reed’s) if you want the fruit to stand out and the ginger flavor in the background. Stronger Ginger Beers have a tendency to override fruits and spices in these funked out Mules. You’re welcome. 🙂
